The American Medical Association (AMA) remains deeply committed to addressing both the opportunities and challenges emerging in today’s evolving health care landscape. As a new administration and Congress set their course, the potential for meaningful change exists—but so does uncertainty. We have heard from physicians who are concerned about proposed policies impacting their practices, patients, and public health. The AMA remains steadfast in our mission to ensure that any reforms support physicians and health care as a whole, strengthen health care delivery, and improve access to high-quality care.
For decades, the AMA has been a leading advocate for policies that protect patient access to care, preserve essential health care funding, and ensure the continued availability of chronic disease treatment, vaccinations, and other lifesaving interventions. We remain committed to advocating for scientifically sound health policies, supporting the physician-patient relationship, and ensuring that the U.S. maintains its leadership in medical innovation and research.
As we look ahead, the AMA is actively engaging with the administration, lawmakers, and stakeholders across medicine to shape policies that prioritize patient care while supporting physicians in their essential role. While early policy proposals and executive actions may spark immediate discussion, many of these initiatives will take time to develop, presenting opportunities for the AMA to provide informed guidance and advocacy.
One of our immediate priorities is pressing Congress to include H.R. 879, the Medicare Patient Access and Practice Stabilization Act, in the forthcoming March 2025 government funding bill. This legislation is critical to ensuring that Medicare patients continue to receive the care they need while providing stability for physician practices.
At the same time, we remain focused on broader, long-term policy goals that will help sustain and improve the health care system. Our approach is deliberate, guided by the robust policy framework established by the AMA House of Delegates, and rooted in evidence-based decision-making.
The AMA is committed to fostering collaboration and ensuring that every effort is made to advance policies that benefit both physicians and patients. As we navigate the months and years ahead, we will continue to amplify the voices of our physician community, advocate for evidence-based policies, and work toward a health care system that provides high-quality, accessible care for all.
