AMA Membership Moves Medicine™
Here's how.
Advocating for patients and physicians
Addressing gun violence
The AMA supports common-sense measures to address gun violence. That’s why we’ve passed over two dozen policies supporting gun-violence restraining orders, tougher background checks, gun-free zones at schools, a ban on the sale of assault-type weapons and removal of firearms from high-risk individuals.
Reforming health care
The AMA's Patients Before Politics campaign resulted in a 48% "share of voice" in the media during the first six months and over 21 million combined digital impressions and engagements—and we're not done yet.
Fighting for physician and patient rights in court
AMA litigation has helped win judgments in more than 400 key cases, including in nearly 70 percent of cases related to abusive litigation against physicians.
Increasing drug pricing transparency
The AMA's Truth in Rx grassroots campaign has built a network of over 150,000 advocates who are fighting for better drug pricing transparency.
Giving voice to the medical profession in the courts
The courts and legal profession rely on the AMA. In fact, the AMA, as the collective voice of physicians, has been cited in 54 case decisions issued by the U.S. Supreme Court—evidence of our reputation and influence.
Resisting scope of practice expansions
So far in 2018, the AMA has tracked over 1,000 state bills related to scope of practice, collaborated with 35 state medical associations and has been directly involved in 24 legislative and regulatory victories.
Defending medical liability reform
Due, in part, to the AMA’s efforts, the state Supreme Court reversed a court of appeals decision and restored the cap—one important component that has helped stabilize the state’s medical liability environment.
Exposing dishonest and unfair insurance practices
For 10 years, the AMA fought relentlessly in the courts for physicians and patients, demanding insurer transparency. And we won. In one of the largest settlements involving a single health insurer, $350 million was recovered for patients and physicians.
Protecting the peer-review process
In nine states, three federal courts of appeals and three times in the U.S. Supreme Court, the AMA has fought to protect the confidentiality of peer review, and to keep lawyers from invading private deliberations to punish physicians.
Preserving patient-physician confidentiality
What should physicians say—or not say—to their patients? The AMA believes physicians should decide. That’s why for more than 20 years, the AMA has been litigating this important issue on your behalf.
Preventing mega-mergers
Two insurance mega-mergers were blocked last year after the AMA led a coalition of 17 states medical societies, regulators and attorneys general to provide unrelenting opposition and testimony.
Fixing prior authorization
Because of the significant impact of prior authorization on both patients and physician practices, the AMA launched a multi-pronged campaign aimed at “right-sizing” insurers’ prior authorization programs.
Preventing unintentional drug overdoses
In collaboration with state medical societies and partners, the AMA has fought for and helped shape naloxone access laws throughout the nation. All 50 states have now enacted a naloxone access law.
Advancing patient care
Ending the opioid epidemic
The work of the AMA's Opioid Task Force has resulted in nearly 120,000 physicians completing AMA courses on opioid prescribing.
Targeting hypertension
The AMA and the American Heart Association partnered to launch Target: BP™, a national initiative to improve blood pressure control. Since then, more than 1,100 physician practices and health systems nationwide have joined.
Preventing type 2 diabetes
After years of AMA partnerships and work to demonstrate value, starting in 2018, millions of at-risk seniors will have free access to the expanded Medicare Diabetes Prevention Program.
Reinventing medical practice
Extinguishing burnout and redesigning your practice
The AMA has assembled more than 40 award-winning tools to help physicians with everything from preventing burnout to creating a strong team culture to choosing the right payment model for your practice.
Improving EHR usability
In combination with AMA advocacy and research, the AMA was successful in removing two of the most time consuming EHR measures—CPOE and CDS. Additionally, policymakers are now reshaping burdensome and complex federal program requirements around EHR use.
Empowering physicians against cyberattacks
The AMA is helping develop affordable resources that help physicians improve their cybersecurity practices and network security, including a checklist for your office computer.
Training the nation's physicians
Rewriting the book on medical education
Our Accelerating Change in Medical Education consortium, a group of 32 leading medical schools, is paving the way to teach future physicians to use technology to support clinical decisions, work in teams and health systems, and become physician leaders.
Driving safe and effective mobile health technology
The AMA helped create Xcertia, a collaboration with top health and technology experts to establish industry-wide guidelines for safe and effective mobile health apps.
Connecting physicians with health tech innovators
The AMA's online networking platform, the Physician Innovation Network, matches interested physicians with tech companies seeking their unique skills.
Turning data into better health care
The AMA’s Integrated Health Model Initiative brings together collaborators across health care and technology to crowdsource clinical expertise, driving a data evolution for improving, organizing and sharing health care information.
Accessing world-class clinical research
As a mark of the AMA’s commitment to physicians’ lifelong learning, the AMA offers each of its members the latest research, innovations and perspectives through the JAMA Network™. Plus, physicians can track CME progress and print certificates at no cost.
