Standing committee spotlight: Committee on American Indian Affairs (CAIA)
Over the past few months, CAIA has been actively involved in projects promoting Native American health. At the 2024 Interim Meeting, the House of Delegates adopted a resolution written by CAIA members promoting health care in tribal jails.
CAIA members also helped highlight Native voices in an event celebrating Native American Heritage Month in collaboration with the Association of Native American Medical Students (ANAMS) and the Minority Issues Committee.
Advocacy updates
AMA advocacy staff in Washington, D.C. have been working to promote key priorities amid a challenging year, including a lame duck Congress and election season. Recent efforts include:
- Conrad 30 waivers: AMA signed on to a letter (PDF) with 33 other health care organizations both applauding the inclusion of the Health Care Workforce Resilience Act and urging the addition of H.R. 4942/S. 665, the Conrad State 30 and Physician Access Reauthorization Act, into the ongoing bipartisan immigration package.
- Affordable Care Act: The AMA provided comments (PDF) to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services on their Patient Protection and ACA Proposed Rule in support of notifying enrollees at risk of losing their Advance Premium Tax Credits.
