January 2025

From MSS Chair Anand Singh

Happy New Year! I hope you had a restful time spent with loved ones during the holidays. The MSS Governing Council was busy preparing for the upcoming semester. Thank you to everyone who attended the "Introduction to AMA" meeting on Jan. 7, 2025. We had a blast getting to meet new members as well as reunite with old ones. We look forward to  engaging with you all throughout the year!

Our MSS policy cycle has already begun and is in full swing. The MSS Open Forum closes Feb. 16, 2025, at 11:59 p.m. Pacific. Everyone who  plans to submit a resolution for MSS consideration must post to the open forum before the deadline to move along the process. We are also excited for the Physician of the Future Summit on Feb. 8, 2025.

Medical Student Advocacy Conference

The AMA’s largest advocacy event and conference for medical students is March 6-7, 2025. It provides students with advocacy training, access to legislators, opportunities to network with their peers and a platform to raise their voice and enact changes in public health policy.

Registration is $45 and closes Feb. 16, 2025, at 11:59 p.m.

Our goal as a group is to raise awareness, educate and advocate for minority health issues. Over the past several years, MIC has made it a priority to highlight various heritage months like Hispanic Heritage Month, LGBTQ+ History Month, Native American Heritage Month, etc., through physician speakers and panels who further amplify the voices and stories of these communities.

This February, we will be celebrating Black History Month in collaboration with the Student National Medical Association and in March, we will celebrate Women’s History Month in collaboration with the MSS Women in Medicine Committee. Additionally, we are advocating for minority communities through op-eds, infographics, action items, programming events at annual and interim conferences, and resolution writing on topics like mental health stigma in minority groups, addressing language access inequality and supporting mentorship for underrepresented minorities.

Supporting you today as a medical student. Protecting your future as a physician.

As the 119th Congress  begins its session, AMA advocacy staff is proactively engaging with returning and freshman legislators to assess legislative priorities, identify champions for critical health care issues and strengthen key relationships. By fostering these strategic connections, the AMA aims to ensure that the physician and medical student perspective is at the forefront of decisions that will influence health policy.

As the new Congress and administration take shape, resources like Congress.gov, the Federal Register, and House and Senate Health Committee calendars offer valuable insights to stay informed and engaged with evolving legislative priorities.
