Cardiovascular disease remains the number one cause of death among adult in the U.S. The latest data shows that hypertension was a primary or contributing cause of close to 700,00 deaths in the United States. Nearly half of adults in the U.S. (122.4 million) have hypertension but only about 1 in 4 adults (25.7%) with hypertension have their condition under control. Controlling hypertension is the single most impactful intervention for preventing death from heart attacks and strokes. The AMA has made hypertension control one of its main priorities.
