From Medicare payment reform to reducing physician burnout, fixing prior authorization to defending against scope creep, the AMA is fighting for you, so you can stay focused on your patients. Hear from AMA members and leaders on these critical challenges.
Leading the charge on Medicare payment reform
Medicare physician pay has declined 33% over the last 20 years. The AMA is urging Congress to pass the Medicare Patient Access and Practice Stabilization Act (H.R. 879), which would prospectively cancel the 2.83% payment cut that went into effect on Jan. 1, while also providing a 2.0% payment update.
Tackling prior authorization
The AMA is challenging insurance companies to eliminate care delays, patient harms and practice hassles. The AMA secured a rule with CMS that will save $15 billion for physician practices over 10 years.
Fixing the system-level drivers of burnout
AMA is the leader in physician well-being, providing real-world solutions to combat burnout at the system level. Since 2019, the AMA’s Joy in Medicine™ Health System Recognition Program has honored over 150 health systems for their dedication to physician well-being.
Making technology work for physicians
The AMA is working to ensure physician voices are integrated into the creation and refinement of all technological aspects of medicine—from telehealth to AI to EHRs. AMA supports legislation to expand coverage of telehealth services through Medicare and make permanent COVID-19 telehealth flexibilities.
Fighting against scope creep
The AMA is defending physicians against scope of practice expansions that threaten patient safety. In 2024, the AMA worked with medical associations to oppose inappropriate scope expansions in 40+ states.
