The roughly 27,000 medical students who will receive their MD and DO degrees this spring have spent most of their time in medical school learning in the shadow of the COVID-19 pandemic that upended their training and handed them a set of unprecedented challenges.

To recognize and honor all that this year’s amazing allopathic and osteopathic school graduates have overcome, the AMA Tribute to the Medical School Class of 2023 is gathering a star-studded crew for a fun and inspiring virtual celebration Sunday, May 21, 7 p.m. CDT.

The event will be hosted by Doctor Mike Varshavski, DO, a board-certified family physician who helps set the record straight on medical and health topics for more than 25 million followers across YouTube and other social media.

This uplifting event is part of the AMA’s commitment to supporting medical students today and protecting their future.

Confirmed participants include: 

  • Anthony Fauci, MD, who recently retired from his roles as director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and chief medical adviser to the president.
  • Ashish Jha, MD, MPH, White House COVID-19 response coordinator.
  • Rochelle Walensky, MD, MPH, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
  • Robert Califf, MD, commissioner of Food and Drug Administration.
  • Adm. Rachel Levine, MD, assistant secretary of health, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
  • Peter Hotez, MD, PhD, dean of the National School of Tropical Medicine, professor of pediatrics and molecular virology and microbiology at Baylor College of Medicine, and co-inventor of the Corbevax SARS-CoV-2 vaccine.
  • Jack Resneck Jr., MD, AMA president, professor and chair of the dermatology department at the University of California, San Francisco, School of Medicine.
  • Sandra Adamson Fryhofer, MD, chair of the AMA Board of Trustees and former president of the American College of Physicians.

This year’s program will build on the astounding success of the AMA Tribute to the Medical School Class of 2020. That event honored the first class of allopathic and osteopathic students to enter practice amid the COVID-19 pandemic—many doing so even prior to graduation to help care for the massive influx of patients in the early pandemic.
