The AMA Academic Physicians Section (APS) held its 2024 Interim Meeting on Friday, Nov. 8 in Orlando, Florida, with approximately 40 academic physician members in attendance from academic institutions across the country.

Your Powerful Ally

The AMA helps physicians build a better future for medicine, advocating in the courts and on the Hill to remove obstacles to patient care and confront today’s greatest health crises.

APS presented an education session, “Medical Education and Health Equity in the Era of Augmented Intelligence.” This session covered approaches to support the ethical and equitable use of AI in medical education and clinical care. The panelists were David Henderson, MD, vice president, medical education equity, diversity, and belonging, AMA, and William Jordan, MD, equity policy and transformation senior director, AMA. Thomas Svolos, MD, APS liaison to the Council on Medical Education, served as the moderator.

APS members had an opportunity to learn more about the work of the AMA from our Board of Trustees liaisons as well as special presentations from the Council on Medical Education, Med Ed, AMA Foundation and AMPAC.

The APS also recognized members of its newly formed education and policy committees.

APS-authored Resolution 907, “Call for Study: The Need for Hospital Interior Temperatures to be Thermally Neutral to Humans within Those Hospitals,” will be considered during the Interim Meeting.

The APS meeting also featured a policy discussion that included a review of the House of Delegates (HOD) Handbook and a dialogue on future resolution ideas.

APS is the home within the AMA for academic physicians, providing an opportunity to influence AMA policy, learn about topics of interest to academic physicians and connect with peers across the country. APS membership is open to any AMA member who meets one of three criteria:

  • Appointed by the dean of a U.S. medical school to represent the institution; or
  • Holds a faculty appointment at a U.S. medical school; or
  • Does not hold a faculty appointment at a U.S. medical school but has an active role in medical education or serves in a clinical/research capacity with an academic medical center, community hospital or other health care setting.
