2024 IMGS Interim Meeting highlights

The International Medical Graduates Section (IMGS) celebrated its 27th Interim Meetings beginning with its Governing Council meeting on Nov. 8 and the IMGS Congress business meetings. The Congress business meeting featured Todd Askew, senior vice president of advocacy, who provided a legislative update. His presentation engaged the audience and resulted in many participant questions.

The AMA helps physicians build a better future for medicine, advocating in the courts and on the Hill to remove obstacles to patient care and confront today’s greatest health crises. 

The section members discussed several HOD policy initiatives of interest and voted upon items for consideration. The IMG Section resolution, "Alternative Pathways for IMGs," was submitted for this November meeting which was recommended for non-consideration but was accepted for business of the House of Delegates.

Participants attended the Busharat Ahmad, MD, Leadership Development Program on the same day, which featured Megan Srinivas, MD, MPH, an IMG physician and Iowa State Representative who provided a presentation on “From Advocacy to Influence: Navigating the Political Landscape. 

Participants learned there are not enough health care voices in the room, and you don’t have to have credentials to testify before a congressional hearing.  

This program designated a maximum of 1.0 hours of AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™.

On Sunday, Nov. 10, the IMG Section culminated its meetings with participation in the first joint Sections Health Equity Caucus, which was convened by the LGBTQ+, Minority Affairs and Women Physicians Sections.
