April 2024

From MSS Chair Natasha Topolski

In March, the MSS hosted our annual Medical Student Advocacy Conference (MAC) in Washington, D.C. This event held particular significance for me as it marked my first AMA conference as an MS1, symbolizing a full-circle moment in my journey. It was during that conference that I realized the impact of my voice as a medical student and the power of advocacy and collective action.

Returning to MAC this year as chair of the MSS and as the newly appointed student member on the AMA Firearm Injury Prevention Task Force served as a reminder of the transformative power of organized medicine in shaping health advocacy leaders. It is invigorating to see such strong and passionate individuals who, I am confident, will emerge as the future leaders of the MSS, the AMA, and beyond, shaping the future of health care.

WIM hosted two panels in celebration of Women’s History Month. The first panel was "Knowing your Worth as Women in Medicine," which featured several guest speakers from the AMA Women’s Physicians Section. The second was a collaboration with MIC, entitled "Black Women in Medicine," which discussed health disparities within medicine and the positionality of Black women physicians as community leaders and change agents.

Our MSS DEI Officer, Charlie Adams, and Board of Trustees Student Liaison, Aliya Siddiqui, traveled to Las Vegas in early March to present at the Asian Pacific American Medical Student Association National Conference (APAMSA). They experienced a warm welcome and are grateful for APAMSA's invitation to speak.

Match Day 2024

Match Week

Match Day was an incredibly exciting day for so many of our members. The MSS Governing Council extends its heartfelt congratulations to each of you who successfully matched. However, it is important to also recognize that every year there are students who do not match. We want to reiterate that this outcome doesn't define a student's worth or potential as a future physician.

I have been honored to take part in a National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) summit and AMA Medical Education National Design Panel. There are many exciting things to come and am proud that the AMA has committed to being a leader in this crucial space.
