Peer advising panel lets students be teachers

. 2 MIN READ

Medical students flexed their teaching muscles with a peer academic advising panel in which second-year students who were top performers in their pathology course helped first-year students prep for the course. Coordinated by Florida International University College of Medicine medical student members of the local AMA Medical Student Section (MSS), the event earned the school recognition for the AMA Section Involvement Grant Event of the Month.

Five second-year students presented on the peer academic advising panel and shared best practices for success to the first-year class.

“The best aspect of this event was promoting the AMA in terms of providing help,” said Muhammad Noor, recruiter for FIU’s AMA-MSS. “Without a doubt, many students find their first year of medical school very tough and actively seek advice before the start of each course at our school. Instead of students having to seek advice, the AMA members came to them to advise them on high-yield studying materials and techniques for Pathology.”

Visit the Event of the Month Web page for a detailed description. The AMA SIG Event of the Month showcases recruitment, community service, education and AMA-MSS National Service Project events coordinated by individual AMA medical student sections.

Is your AMA medical student section holding similar events? Submit a SIG Recap Form and photos within 30 days of your event to be eligible for the Event of the Month nomination, which the AMA selects each month. At the end of the school year, all monthly awards will be showcased in June at the AMA-MSS Annual Assembly Meeting and be voted on by students for one Event of the Year winner.

Through the SIG program, the AMA-MSS provides an opportunity for local AMA medical student sections to:

  • Educate students about the AMA and provide an opportunity for students to get more involved
  • Help put AMA policy into action by providing a service to medical school campuses or communities
  • Engage in activities that focus on AMA's top priorities
