2024 OMSS Interim Meeting highlights

The Organized Medical Staff Section (OMSS) held its 2024 Interim Meeting on Thursday, Nov. 7 and Friday, Nov. 8, in Orlando, Florida. The Meeting was attended by more than 40 organized medical staff physicians and invited guests.

The AMA helps physicians build a better future for medicine, advocating in the courts and on the Hill to remove obstacles to patient care and confront today’s greatest health crises.

Attendees heard several educational presentations, conducted policy business and engaged in future section planning. This included presentations from the AMA Center for Health Equity and AMPAC about the different political and policy activities the AMA is currently engaged in to benefit physicians. The OMSS Assembly also heard an update from Board Liaisons Ilse Levin, DO, and Willie Underwood, MD, on key Board of Trustee initiatives. 

On Thursday, Nov. 7, attendees heard a presentation from Daniel Blaney-Koen, senior attorney with the AMA Advocacy Resource Center, on “Legislative and Regulatory Advocacy to Support Physician Wellness.” 

On Friday, Nov. 8, the OMSS Assembly hosted two educational sessions. The first highlighted the new AMA credentialing tool VeriCre™ in “Eliminating Obstacles to Patient Care with VeriCre” from Lori Prestesater, AMA senior vice president of health solutions. The second explored the role and use of augmented intelligence in “Augmented Intelligence in Practice—Solutions, Engagement, and Impact” by Margaret Lozovatsky, MD, AMA vice president of digital health innovations.

OMSS considered nine original resolutions and three reports from the OMSS Governing Council. The following items were enacted:

  • OMSS Governing Council Report C: Acquisition by Private Equity/Hedge Funds into the Practice of Medicine
  • Resolution 2: Improving Institutional Memory/Revising AMA OMSS Internal Operating Procedures
  • Resolution 4: Retaining the In-Person Reference Committee and Resolution Submission

The section adopted five items, but held these back to be transmitted at the 2025 AMA Annual Meeting:

  • OMSS Governing Council Report B: Managing Conflict of Interest Inherent in New Payment Models—Patient Disclosure
  • OMSS Governing Council Report D: Inclusion of Patient Safety and Environmental Stewardship in CSAPH Report Improving Research Standards, Approval Processes Post-Market and Surveillance Standards for Medical Devices
  • Resolution 1: Billing and Collections Transparency
  • Resolution 3: Aiding Members of the Medical Staff
  • Resolution 9: The Need for Long-Term Study of Potential Side Effects of GIP and GLP-1 Medications

The Section adopted four items which were immediately advanced to the House of Delegates at the 2024 AMA Interim Meeting:

  • Resolution 5: Development of Resources For Medical Staffs to Engage in Collective Negotiation with Hospital and Health Systems
  • Resolution 6: Transparency of Facility Fees for Hospital Outpatient Department Visits
  • Resolution 7: American Kidney Donation Legislation
  • Resolution 8: Addressing and Reducing Patient Boarding in Emergency Departments
