The Private Practice Physicians Section (PPPS) held its Interim Meeting on Friday, Nov. 8, 2024, in Orlando, Florida. The meeting was attended by more than 40 private and independent practice physicians and invited guests.
Attendees heard several educational presentations, conducted policy business and engaged in future section planning. This included presentations from AMPAC and the AMA Advocacy Resource Center about the different political and policy activities the AMA is currently engaged in to benefit physicians. The assembly also heard an update from Board Liaisons David Aizuss, MD, Lisa Egbert, MD, and Bruce Scott, MD, on key Board of Trustee initiatives.
PPPS education sessions
The assembly hosted two educational sessions. The first, “How to Grow a Professional Audience to Leverage Your Practice” from Phil Boucher, MD, guided attendees through actionable and sustainable strategies for building and growing an online presence for their practices. The second session, “Cybersecurity for Private Practice Physicians” by Christian Dameff, MD, emergency physician and co-director of the UCSD Center for Healthcare Cybersecurity, unpacked the risks, preparation strategies and cost considerations of cybersecurity for private practice physicians.
PPPS elections
Elections were held for two governing council positions to fill vacancies for 2024-2026 terms. The results are:
- Secretary: Syed Danish, MD
- Member at Large, 9-50: Manna Varghese, MD
PPPS resolutions
The PPPS considered five original resolutions and two reports from the PPPS Governing Council.
The section enacted two items:
- OMSS Governing Council Report B—Rebuke and Appeal CMS Interoperability and Prior Authorization Final Rule
- OMSS Governing Council Report C—Getting on with the Times—Expanding PPPS Inclusivity Via Hybrid Meetings and Voting
The section referred one item back to the Governing Council for future report back:
- Resolution 3—Equal Opportunity for Payment for “On Call” Duty
The section adopted one item to be held back and instead transmitted at Annual 2025:
- Resolution 1—An Assessment of Physician Support for Value-Based Payment Models and its Impact on Healthcare to Inform AMA Advocacy Efforts
The section adopted one item which was immediately transmitted to the 2024 Interim House of Delegates:
- Late Resolution 2—Supporting Penalties on Insurers Who Fail to Pay Doctors
The section considered but did not adopt two resolutions:
- Late Resolution 1—Conflicts of Interest and Transparency at the PPPS—Let Members Decide
- Late Resolution 3—CMS Leadership and Policy Synergies in the New Administration
