The AMA Senior Physicians Section (SPS) held its 2025 Annual Meeting on Friday, June 6 in Chicago, Illinois.
SPS education sessions
The first program, titled “Prior Authorization in Medicare Advantage—The Road to Reform,” featured Heather McComas, PharmD, director of AMA administrative simplification initiatives. This session explored recently proposed regulatory and legislative changes to prior authorization processes in Medicare Advantage (MA) plans, with a focus on increasing transparency. Edward Bope, MD, chair of the SPS Governing Council, served as the moderator.
The second program, “Transitioning out of Active Medical Practice: Your Next Move,” was led by Debra Atkisson, MD, a professionally certified life coach. The session addressed strategies for transitioning out of clinical practice, including planning a gradual shift in responsibilities, maintaining physical and cognitive health, and preparing financially. It also highlighted the importance of career fulfillment and continued professional growth in the later stages of a medical career. Jenny Boyer, MD, JD, PhD, a member of the SPS Governing Council, facilitated the discussion.
