February 2025

From IMGS Chair Tani Malhotra, MD

The time between meetings always goes by faster than anticipated. Governing council applications are open, and we appreciate all those who have applied. The Nominating Committee, under the leadership of Natalia Solenkova, MD, PhD, is working hard to ensure that all applications are reviewed for eligibility.

Check the list of additional monthly issues of IMGS member news for details on the section's advocacy efforts, leadership opportunities, education, member profiles and more.

Over the past two years the governing council has been working with a committee of section members to update our Internal Operating Procedures (IOP). One anticipated change is a modification to the charge of the Nominating Committee, based on feedback from section members who felt that the committee did not allow equal opportunity for potential candidates.

While our IOP continues to work its way through the review and approval process, I want to assure you that we are doing our best to make our slate of candidates fair and representative of our section. Please watch for your ballot. If you are running, please note that you may not begin campaigning until mid-March.

With the inauguration of the new president, we anticipate several changes that may impact section members. Our AMA is committed to following our policy and I assure you we have robust policy for the protection of and practice of IMGs. Under the leadership of Delegate Deepu Sudhakaran, MD, and Alternate Delegate Luis Isea, MD, the Resolution and Policy Committee had their first planning meeting of the year at the end of January.

If you believe that current AMA policy has gaps relating to IMGs, or believe that existing policy needs to be updated, please reach out with your policy ideas directly to our delegates, or you may reach out via the section email, img@ama-assn.org. The AMA policy is strong because it is developed and improved by our membership. I encourage you to send in your ideas.

At the IMGS Annual Meeting in June I would like to highlight the contributions made by IMGs. If you or an IMG you know has received an award or recognition, been appointed to a national board, or promoted to a leadership role at an academic institution, we want to hear from you. It is important for us to recognize and publicize the tremendous contributions being made by IMGs.

As always, if you have any additional concerns or issues you would like me to address at the AMA or cover in a future newsletter, please do not hesitate to reach out at img@ama-assn.org.
