April 2025

From YPS Chair Sam Mathis, MD, MBA

I’ve been thinking a lot about the recent news article regarding a visitor to Washington, D.C. As they were admiring the cherry blossoms, they took a picture and inadvertently captured a few men going for a run behind them. One of those men happened to be former President Barack Obama.

What I find most striking about this story is the fact that these tourists were just doing something they loved when they had a chance encounter that had a profound impact on their lives. When we do the things we love, we invite these opportunities into our own lives. Or better yet, maybe we have that profound impact on others' lives.

This month, I want to highlight the board liaisons to the Young Physician Section. The YPS has three amazing trustees working with our section over the past year. Toluwalase A. Ajayi, MD, Alexander Ding, MD, MS, MBA, and Marilyn J. Heine, MD, have been amazing assets and powerful advocates for issues pertaining to young physicians. All three have been open to hearing concerns that have been raised to the GC and engaging in thoughtful dialogue over the past year. If you see them around during the annual meeting, please make sure to thank them for their service to our section and the AMA as a whole.

It’s hard to believe that we are only a few months away from seeing each other again at the annual meeting. Your GC has been hard at work finishing the pre-event planning and schedule as well as preparing for both the YPS Assembly and House of Delegates meetings. Registration is now open for the meeting and YPS Assembly resolutions are due by April 11 to be included in the online virtual reference forum. Soon, we will be putting out a call for interested members to participate in the handbook review. This is a great way to get national committee experience and help set the initial position for the section. Please remember that to participate in handbook review, you must be registered and have confirmation from your state or specialty society that you are a representative.

In addition to representing your state or specialty society, I want to highlight the leadership opportunities within the YPS for the upcoming year.

Governing council

We have three governing council positions up for election this year: chair-elect, speaker and member at-large. These three positions are great ways to get involved in leadership on a national level. If you have questions about position responsibilities, time commitment or running for a position, please reach out to your GC or staff for more details. Nominations forms are due by May 10, but you may also submit a nomination during the assembly meeting.

Standing committees

We will also be putting out a call for members to our three standing committees: Engagement and Opportunity Committee, Professional Development Committee and Resolution Writing Committee.

Finally, I want to share our gratitude with you. Serving this section and the members is an honor for myself and your entire GC. We do not take it lightly that you have placed your trust in us to represent the interests of young physicians within the AMA. We value our members and are thankful to you, your strength and your voice. The work you do in advocating for your patients and colleagues makes our job easy. We have the privilege of highlighting our members, their wins, their struggles and their passion. Your voice matters, and we work to amplify that voice across the nation. Thank you.

As always, email us at yps@ama-assn.org with any comments and questions.
