Keeping up with augmented intelligence (AI)—often called artificial intelligence—isn’t easy for health care teams. By its very nature, AI is constantly changing, and the pace of its change is unprecedented. But as AI-enabled tools grow in number and gain a deeper foothold in health care, it’s all-important that they are designed, developed and deployed in ways that are ethical, equitable and responsible.
That means making sure patients and physicians understand how AI is being used. That is why the world's preeminent network of medical journals, published by the AMA, is going all in to help physicians understand the trends and implications of AI, as well as the technology’s capacity to reshape medicine.
JAMA+ AI, a new channel from the JAMA Network®, is a window into the premier scientific content, educational reviews and commentary on AI and medicine published across JAMA®, JAMA Network Open and the JAMA specialty journals. JAMA+ AI builds on that published content with new multimedia materials, including interviews with authors, videos, medical news and a regular podcast.
It’s all about accessibility
“For clinicians already well-versed in AI applications in medicine, the channel provides a way to keep up with a flood of new work all in one place, or delve deeper into a particular topic,” wrote Roy H. Perlis, MD, editor-in-chief of JAMA+ AI, and Kirsten Bibbins-Domingo, PhD, MD, MAS, editor in chief of JAMA and the JAMA Network, in an editorial announcing the project.
“For other interested readers looking to understand the burgeoning field, JAMA+ AI also provides an opportunity to learn and master aspects of this new technology,” Drs. Perlis and Bibbins-Domingo wrote, adding that one of the goals of the channel is to demystify AI technology.
“Clinicians, researchers and policymakers have heard the buzzwords but may feel like they lack the foundation to critically approach articles about AI,” they wrote. “JAMA+ AI allows us the freedom to enrich our articles with additional materials, aimed at making them more accessible.”
From AI implementation to EHR adoption and usability, the AMA is making technology work for physicians, ensuring that it is an asset to doctors—not a burden.
Expert insights and best practices
The channel already features more than two dozen resources, including:
- “Performance of Machine Learning Suicide Risk Models in an American Indian Population.” Do published suicide risk machine learning models hold relevance for an American Indian population?
- “Performance of Multimodal Artificial Intelligence Chatbots Evaluated on Clinical Oncology Cases.” What is the medical accuracy of multimodal artificial intelligence chatbots compared with text-only chatbots when evaluated on questions about oncology cases?
- “Electronic Nudges to Increase Influenza Vaccination in Patients With Chronic Diseases: A Randomized Clinical Trial.” Can electronically delivered letter-based nudges informed by behavioral science increase influenza vaccination uptake among young and middle-aged patients with chronic diseases?

Videos, podcasts make it easy
The channel also features numerous podcasts and videos, including “Five Big Ideas in AI and Health With JAMA+ AI Editor in Chief Roy Perlis.”
“AI is potentially as transformative as things like gene therapy or genomics more broadly in its capacity to really change how we do almost everything that we in medicine do,” Dr. Perlis said. “AI is here. Just because AI is the flavor of the month doesn't mean it can't also be transformative. We've come a long way from the days when AI was driving a robot around a maze, but now what we need is evidence that it can actually change care.”
Authors seeking to publish their work on AI are invited to communicate directly with the AI editor at the relevant JAMA Network specialty journal. Through JAMA+ AI, accepted authors of AI content will have the opportunity to have their work seen by the full JAMA Network audience encompassing 11 specialties.
