Pearl of the Week: On- and off-ramp policies for PTO

Reduce barriers to taking time off

STEPS Forward Pearl of the Week

Practices can reduce burnout by making it easier for physicians to take all of their allotted paid time off. Build policies that make it easier to transition into and out of a physician’s time off. Before the time outside the office, manage patient expectations with ample communication about cross-coverage and the reasonable response time for messages. After the time off, offer the physician space to catch up on any backlog of administrative and clinical tasks.
