Some health care leaders are unaware that the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) does not impose any limits on verbal orders in the outpatient setting. CMS has limited its guidance to orders pertaining to medications and biologics in hospital settings, and CMS advises against frequently using verbal orders in that setting. Physicians in Medicare-participating hospitals can use verbal orders as well as pre-printed and electronic standing orders, order sets and protocols.
