These experts explore available tools and resources to assist physicians in determining the need for a psychopharmacological intervention, along with key steps and interventions physicians can take to address routine and complex behavioral health conditions.

John Kern, MD

Dr. Kern's work focuses on training and implementation of the collaborative care model as well as improvement of the medical outcomes of people living with severe mental illness. He has been involved with the training of thousands of clinicians in Collaborative Care, with a special focus on leading a years-long series of learning collaboratives for psychiatric providers. 

Prior to his UW appointment, he was for 22 years the chief medical officer at Regional Mental Health Center in Merrillville, Indiana, where he developed and supervised a number of integrated programs, both collaborative care and programs directed at integrating the medical care of people with SMI, and developed and served as chief medical officer of a new Federally Qualified Health Center. He is one of the authors of two American Psychiatric Press textbooks on integrated care for psychiatrists, papers on the care of bipolar disorder in the primary care setting, and a recent monograph on improving psychiatric care in the CMHC setting: “Optimizing the Psychiatric Workflow Within a Team-based Care Framework.”

Other interests include the expansion of scope of the collaborative care model, innovations directed towards improving the psychiatric workplace and improving the quality of instruction provided to practitioners of collaborative care.

Ryan Laschober, MD

Dr. Laschober is the program director for Waco Family Medicine Residency, one of the nation’s top family medicine residency programs. He is also the editor-in-chief of The Waco Guide to Psychopharmacology in Primary Care. He is invested in full-scope family medicine with special interests in global health, mental health care, social determinants of health and resident education.

Personally, Ryan, his wife, and four children are involved in their church, foster care/adoption, international missions, and have chosen to live in an underserved neighborhood in Waco, Texas, blocks away from the community health center where he practices.
