Joseph M. Maurice, MD, MS
Candidate for Council on Medical Education
Term
2025-2030
Dedicated to patients & medical education
Dr. Joseph M. Maurice dedicates his career to patient care and medical education and is at the forefront of this critical medicine component, whether at the undergraduate, graduate, or continuing medical education level.
We face numerous challenges that directly impact medical education:
Physician shortages: We must address the projected shortage of up to 124,000 physicians by 2034. This requires expanding medical school capacity and changes to the curriculum.
Cybersecurity: As health care becomes increasingly digital, we must integrate robust cybersecurity training to protect patient data and maintain the integrity of our health care systems.
Tailored health care: Our educational programs should emphasize the uniqueness of all the populations we serve, encouraging students to consider careers in areas where they will succeed.
Thoughtful, effective educator
My vision for medical education rooted in three key pillars
- Competency-based education: We must transition from time-based to outcomes-based training, ensuring our graduates possess the skills and knowledge necessary to provide high-quality patient care.
- Integration of technology: The rapid advancement of artificial intelligence and virtual reality necessitates a curriculum that teaches their use and cultivates critical thinking skills to leverage these tools effectively.
- Empathy: Our educational programs must reflect the diverse population we serve. We must actively work towards increasing empathy training in medical schools and graduate medical education programs.
