Candidate for election at 2025 Annual Meeting: Mary Ann Contogiannis, MD

Elections will be held at the Annual Meeting of the House of Delegates on June 10, 2025.

Officers and five councils are elected by the American Medical Association House of Delegates (HOD) at the Annual Meeting. The elections are conducted during a special election session under the supervision of the Committee on Rules and Credentials and the chief teller, who are appointed by the speakers. The speaker and vice speaker are responsible for overall administration of the elections. Voting is conducted by secret ballot.

Mary Ann Contogiannis, MD-medicine and patients

Dr. Contogiannis is a dedicated, compassionate physician who has a deep commitment to organized medicine and the AMA. She joined the AMA as a medical student and has maintained her membership and service to the AMA and organized medicine since then. Her leadership skills have been evident as her peers have elected her to leadership positions in the professional organizations she is a member of. She has served as a resident trustee member of the AMA Board of Trustees. Additionally, while practicing as a plastic surgeon she has served on the NC Medical Society Board of Directors, the ASPS Board of Directors and is past president of the NC Society of Plastic Surgeons. Dr. Contogiannis has a wealth of experience and a deep understanding of organized medicine, with both state and national experience which she brings to her position on the Council on Constitution and Bylaws (CC&B). 

In 2021 Dr. Contogiannis had the honor of being elected by her peers to the CC&B. Her experience, commitment and passion have brought energy and insight into the council over the last four years. She was elected vice-chair of CC&B by her colleagues as she has clearly demonstrated her commitment to her profession, the AMA and CC&B. Dr. Contogiannis is a member of the American Institute of Parliamentarians. She understands the importance of providing order and structure to our AMA through the Constitution and Bylaws at the request of the House of Delegates. She has also served on bylaws committees for her hospital system, other medical organizations and many civic organizations during her career. "Throughout my medical career I have been drawn to focus on health policy and advocacy as this is vital to providing care to our patients. I humbly ask for your vote in June."

Dr. Contogiannis is always willing to serve her profession and patients in many capacities all while managing and practicing in a busy private practice. She strives to provide the best medical care for her patients at home in Greensboro, North Carolina as well as at all her AMA meetings, advocacy conferences, and statewide health policy initiatives she participates in. She is compassionate in delivering medical and surgical care to her patients to make each patient feel comfortable that they are receiving the best care possible. Dr. Contogiannis is a steadfast supporter of medical initiatives in Greensboro and North Carolina and a pillar of support for medical issues in her community. 

Her family values and relationships are also very important to her as she grew up in a warm and loving family environment. You can often find her in her kitchen at home cooking up a storm with her family and friends!
