Pauline P. Huynh, MD
Candidate for AMA Board of Trustees
Term
2025-2027
Fighting for all physicians and the future of medicine
Dr. Huynh is deeply committed to her patients and the medical profession, and is a fierce and proven advocate in leveraging the power of organized medicine to champion evidenced-based policy for the betterment of public health. Her advocacy focuses on critical issues affecting physicians and patients alike, spanning physician workforce protections, health equity, firearm safety and global vaccine access. A leader in the AMA since her first year of medical school, she has served on AMA Council on Constitution and Bylaws and two section governing councils, along with other state and national professional organizations. As chair of the AMA Resident and Fellow Section, she focused on physician well-being and workforce issues through the lens of trainee protections and the impact of residency program closures.
Beyond the AMA, Dr. Huynh has championed health care policy at local, state and national levels, working to enhance medical practice and equitable health care delivery. She played a pivotal role in securing early COVID-19 vaccine access through private physician practices in Maryland. As part of the AAO-HNS Board of Governors she has contributed to strategic planning and grassroots mobilization around payment reform, scope of practice legislation and continued access to telehealth. In the face of unprecedented threats to our health care system, federal agencies and physicians’ ability to provide care, she believes it is imperative that the AMA remains a relentless yet nimble force in safeguarding our patients, our profession and the sanctity of science and public health.
Her commitment to our patients, profession and the future of medicine is why Dr. Huynh is endorsed by the:
- California Medical Association
- AMA PacWest Conference
- Resident & Fellow Section
- American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery
- MedChi, The Maryland State Medical Society
In her free time, when she’s not visiting family in Southern California, she enjoys fostering kittens, petting every dog she sees and trying out new coffee shops.
Advocacy priorities
Dr. Huynh is uniquely positioned to speak to the concerns of our rising physician workforce and special considerations regarding the future of medicine. Her priorities are informed by her ongoing work in our House, her recent role as the chair of the Resident & Fellow Section, and the feedback she has received both within the AMA and external partners in organized medicine and include: workforce protections, practice autonomy, government encroachment on the patient-physician relationship, and a viable health care system that allows us to best care for our patients.
- Protecting the physician workforce is foundational to ensure our patients have access to high quality, equitable care. Cuts to Medicare and Medicaid reimbursement threaten the viability of our practices, hospital systems, and medical education and bring tremendous harm and reduce access to necessary care services for our nation’s most vulnerable populations—from children and pregnant persons, to the elderly, to the disabled. Physician protections must include robust advocacy against legislative, judicial, or regulatory changes that intrude on the physician-patient relationship or the provision of evidence-based care. Lastly, we must invest in trainee and physician protections spanning licensure, scope of practice, and the structural causes of burnout.
- Empowering leaders within medicine and public health is essential during this critical juncture. A participant in our House of Delegates, Dr. Huynh believes firmly in the AMA’s role to cultivate strong leaders in our communities, organization and professional societies to advocate for the advancement of science and public health. To that end, she will champion for our AMA to continue investing in mentorship opportunities so our leaders reflect our House of medicine and communities. She believes the strongest advocacy is rooted in the synergy between an energetic, mobilized membership, political acumen of our legislative staffers, and responsive, directional leadership from the Board.
- Reaffirming our commitment to health equity enhances our ability to provide all patients the care they need and deserve. Our visionary AMA Strategic Plan catalyzed crucial national conversation regarding equity, disparity, access and outcomes for our patients and communities. In the face of legislative and regulatory actions undermining this work, our AMA’s voice is crucial. Our AMA must continue to embed equity into our organizational systems and practices; support our colleagues from marginalized groups and promote their representation in our House of Medicine; and engage external partners and civil leaders in policy solutions with an equity lens.
