Academic Physicians Section (APS) leadership opportunities

UPDATED | 3 Min Read

The Academic Physicians Section (APS) offers its members various opportunities to be involved and advocate for patients and the profession.

Your Powerful Ally

The AMA is your powerful ally, focused on addressing the issues important to you, so you can focus on what matters most—patients. We will meet this challenge together.

The strategy and activities of the APS are directed by a nine-member governing council elected by section membership.

The next regularly scheduled APS Governing Council elections will be held at the 2025 APS Annual Meeting. There are open positions for multiple roles on the governing council including:

  • Chair-elect
  • Member at-large (three positions available)

Applications were due March 7. Contact aps@ama-assn.org for additional information.

The APS nominations committee will meet in March/April to review candidates for open positions and develop a proposed slate of candidates. The governing council will review and approve the slate. The slate of nominees is voted upon at the APS Annual Meeting in June.

The APS endorses candidates for AMA House of Delegates (HOD) elections. Candidates seeking endorsement for the AMA Board of Trustees or AMA councils must be a current or former member of the APS. Details on the endorsement process for elections occurring during the 2025 and 2026 AMA Annual Meetings are available.

2025 elections

Candidates may send an email to aps@ama-assn.org to request information about the endorsement process by Feb. 25, 2025, at noon Central.

2026 elections

The APS process for endorsing candidates is detailed on the HOD webpage. Candidates may send an email to aps@ama-assn.org to request information about the endorsement process by Feb. 1, 2025.

The APS will consider a written questionnaire submitted by candidates seeking endorsement. The questionnaire will be distributed to current or former APS members requesting endorsement information by the specified timeline, in compliance with timing and other rules set by the AMA speakers. Separate interviews will not be conducted, and candidates for any office will not be permitted to address the APS membership during the business meeting or associated activities.

The APS committees provide opportunities for leadership development while advancing the goals of the section. The APS has two standing committees:

Education Committee

The goal of the APS Education Committee is to provide content focused on topics related to issues impacting academic physicians while reflecting the diverse needs and experiences of APS members. Committee members will be requested to serve one-year terms that expire upon conclusion of the Annual Meeting of the AMA House of Delegates (HOD). Members are eligible to serve a maximum of two one-year terms. Service on the inaugural committee will not count towards the term limit.

During their term, committee members will:

  • Share ideas and insights to inform education programming for the section.
  • Assist with development of learning objectives.
  • Identify potential speakers for education programming.

Policy Committee

The goal of the APS Policy Committee is to create impactful policy that reflects the concerns of academic physicians and contributes to the work of the AMA. Committee members will be requested to serve one-year terms that expire upon conclusion of HOD. Members are eligible to serve a maximum of two one-year terms. Service on the inaugural committee will not count towards the term limit.

During their term, committee members will:

  • Review HOD reports and resolutions for topics impacting academic physicians and propose a course of action (e.g., support, monitor, etc.).
  • Identify topics relevant to academic physicians and draft resolutions for consideration by the section.
  • Review draft resolutions for accuracy and consistency with policy convention, current research, scope of AMA actions, etc.

Committee applications for the 2025-2026 term are due April 7 at 11:45 p.m. Central.

The AMA appoints or nominates physicians to a variety of positions in medical education, such as Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) Review Committees and specialty boards. Learn more on the medical education leadership opportunities page.
