Women Physicians Section (WPS) leadership opportunities

Growing the Representation and Reach of Women Leaders (GRROWL), aims to advance women in leadership positions by addressing barriers and promoting leadership development. 

Committee members are requested to serve two-year terms. Regular meetings are held on the third Monday of each month at 7 p.m. Central for 75-90 minutes (with the expectation of no meetings in August and December). Members are expected to attend all 10 meetings annually, with up to two absences allowed.

The WPS Governing Council is responsible for directing the strategy and activities of the section. The next WPS Governing Council elections will be held in Spring 2026.

In addition to being responsible for directing the programs and activities of the section, WPS Governing Council involvement includes attending the governing council meetings, which serve as the platform for setting WPS direction and activities. Attendance is also required on regular conference calls.

WPS House of Delegates (HOD) Handbook Review Committees convene prior to each WPS business meeting to review items of business under consideration by the AMA HOD. Please complete the WPS Handbook Review Committee volunteer sign-up form. Contact WPS to learn more.  The deadline to volunteer was April 24 for the annual meeting. 

WPS associates are appointed by their state or specialty medical societies to serve as liaisons between WPS and their appointing organizations. This network of women leaders is instrumental in implementing WPS activities at the local level and advancing women in leadership positions. Learn more and apply to be an WPS associate.

Presented by WPS in conjunction with the AMA Foundation, the Joan F. Giambalvo Fund for the Advancement of Women provides scholarships of up to $10,000 to support research advancing the study of women in the medical profession and strengthening the AMA's ability to identify and address the issues affecting women physicians and medical students. Learn more and apply.

The WPS Inspiration Award provides the opportunity for members to acknowledge and honor physicians who have offered their time, wisdom and support throughout the member's professional career. These individuals may have steered others into a specialty they love, helped them find work/life balance, guided them through a professional society or served as an important role model.
