NATIONAL HARBOR, Md. — The American Medical Association (AMA) honored Greg Bernica, chief executive officer of the Harris County Medical Society (HCMS), with a Medical Executive Lifetime Achievement Award. The award honors a medical association executive who has contributed substantially to the goals and ideals of the medical profession.

“In times of crisis, natural disaster, and against the constantly changing landscape of medicine, Greg Bernica has been a steady, devoted leader of HCMS – the largest county medical society in the country – for the past 27 years,” said AMA President Barbara L. McAneny, M.D. “His unwavering commitment to the mission of HCMS is admired by its members, and evidenced by continuous membership growth.”

Bernica receives this honor after 35 years with HCMS, including 27 as its CEO.  His many initiatives and accomplishments include creating a Business of Medicine Department and Payment Advocacy Program to assist member physicians with the business and payments side of medicine. He also led the HCMS response to Hurricane Harvey, one of the worst storms to hit Texas. Under his leadership, HCMS reached out to Harris County physicians to support one of the largest shelters in Houston, securing 400 physician volunteers who worked 2,500 hours and treated more than 4,000 patients after the hurricane.

The AMA presented the award to Bernica during the 2018 AMA Interim Meeting.
