WASHINGTON — The American Medical Association (AMA) presented The Honorable Brian Shiozawa, M.D., a board-certified emergency physician and Utah State Senator, with the Dr. Nathan Davis Award for Outstanding Government Service.
For more than 20 years, Dr. Shiozawa worked as an emergency medicine doctor at the St. Mark’s Hospital Emergency Department in Millcreek, Utah. Since being elected to the State Senate in 2013, Dr. Shiozawa has—among other priorities—drafted and fought for the enactment of legislation that promotes economic growth and compassionate service for victims of violence. He is advocating currently for the Healthy Utah Bill, which aims to provide Medicaid coverage to approximately 90,000 uninsured and underprivileged Utah citizens.
“A dedicated public servant and physician, Dr. Shiozawa has always stood ready and able to champion initiatives that benefit citizens in Utah,” said AMA Board Chair Gerald E. Harmon, M.D. “As a legislator and physician, he has been a strong advocate for affordable health care, Medicaid reform, Utah’s health insurance exchange and better treatment programs for autism. The AMA is dedicated to improving the health of the nation, and it is our honor to present Dr. Shiozawa with this award for his commitment to doing the same.”
Dr. Shiozawa was one of six honorees chosen this year to receive the Dr. Nathan Davis Award for Outstanding Government Service. The award, named for the founding father of the AMA, recognizes elected and career officials in federal, state or municipal service whose outstanding contributions have promoted the art and science of medicine and the betterment of public health.
Dr. Shiozawa earned his medical degree from the University of Washington and completed his residency at the University of Utah. The AMA presented Dr. Shiozawa the Dr. Nathan Davis Award for Outstanding Government Service Award last night at a ceremony in Washington, D.C. as part of the AMA’s National Advocacy Conference.
