Social Determinants of Health
Public health is often determined by factors outside the hospital. Understanding the health determinants that shape our well-being is essential for improving population health outcomes. What are the social determinants of health? They are the social, economic, and environmental factors that contribute to health disparities, affecting the quality of life and longevity of individuals and communities. Examples of social determinants of health include poverty, discrimination, social isolation, and environmental factors like pollution and climate change. The AMA is committed to addressing the social determinants of health to improve outcomes for all Americans.
