The National Academy of Medicine, formerly the Institute of Medicine, has announced the election of 80 new members in the United States and internationally, recognizing “individuals who have demonstrated outstanding professional achievement and commitment to service.” Among these are the editor-in-chief of JAMA and the AMA group vice president for medical education.
Howard Bauchner, MD, is editor-in-chief of JAMA and the JAMA Network and a professor of pediatrics and public health at Boston University School of Medicine, a position from which he is currently on leave. Dr. Bauchner has guided the JAMA Network into the future using such interactive features as multimedia, including video and audio, and social media, among other innovative additions.
Susan E. Skochelak, MD, is the group vice president for medical education and leader of the AMA’s Accelerating Change in Medical Education initiative, which seeks to align physician training and education with the fast-evolving health care system and supports medical schools by funding innovative projects. Prior to her work at the AMA, Dr. Skochelak was a professor of family medicine and senior associate dean for academic affairs at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health, where she developed new programs in rural, urban and global health as well as a new master of public health degree.
“The [AMA] is deeply proud of the accolades that two of its own have received today,” AMA CEO and Executive Vice President James L. Madara, MD, said in a statement Monday morning. Drs. Bauchner and Skochelak “continue to inspire the medical profession through their achievements, leadership and contributions to the AMA’s core goal of improving the health of the nation.”
