October 2024

From IMGS Chair Tani Malhotra, MD

This October we are celebrating IMG Recognition Week, Oct. 21-25. IMGs make up a quarter of all the physicians in the U.S. and a larger portion of physicians are providing care to rural and underserved populations. While IMGs must clear several well-meant hurdles to practice in the U.S., they also face common prejudices that immigrants experience. Despite this, IMGs have made significant contributions to the U.S. health care system. George Abraham, MD, will be hosting our key event for IMG Recognition Week on Monday, Oct. 21, at 7 p.m. Central and highlighting just some of these. Register now. We look forward to you joining us.

Physician mentor recognition

We will also be recognizing a physician mentor. If you feel an IMG contributed significantly to your life, please nominate them at [email protected]. The IMG Physician Mentor of the Year will be recognized during IMG Recognition Week.

As we get closer to the interim meeting, I invite all of you to participate in the policymaking of the AMA. For the first time, all section members who register for the IMG Section Meeting will have the option to participate in the handbook review and provide their feedback on the positions that the IMG Section should be taking for a variety of issues. I invite you to please register for the meeting and sign up for our Handbook Review Committee to shape the policies of the AMA. To learn more about the policymaking process of the AMA, register now.

This month, I would like to introduce you to our chair-elect, Roopa Naik, MD. Dr. Naik joined the governing council in 2023. She is from India and is an internist currently practicing in Pennsylvania with a passion for teaching. As faculty at the Geisinger residency program, she strongly advocates for fair representation and recognition of IMG physicians, and as a practicing physician, for equitable delivery of medical care to the patients. In her free time, she loves to bake and explore new places.

As always, if you have any additional concerns or issues you would like me to address at the AMA or cover in a future newsletter, please do not hesitate to reach out at [email protected].
