What is the Electronic Residency Application Service® (ERAS®)?
A centralized, online application service provided by the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) that applicants use to deliver their application, along with supporting documents—such as a residency application personal statement—to participating residency programs.
How does the National Residency Matching Program® (NRMP®) work?
A private, non-profit organization established in 1952 at the request of medical students to provide an orderly and fair mechanism for matching the preferences of applicants for U.S. residency positions with the preferences of residency program directors.
NRMP, also referenced as The Match®, is a separate organization and system from ERAS. After applying to programs and interviewing, the NRMP provides programs and applicants the ability to submit their training preferences through rank order lists. Those lists are then processed using a Nobel Prize winning matching algorithm to make the best match possible for both applicants and programs.
